Kyphoplasty for Vertebral Compression Fracture

Kyphoplasty is a procedure which focuses on treating vertebral body compression fractures. These are small breaks in the thick mass of bone that makes up the front part of the spine. When there is a compression fracture, part or all of a spine bone sees a collapse. A vertebral fracture causes a collapse or compression of the spine, shortening it and bending it forward.

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive percutaneous procedure in which an expandable bone plug is inserted into the fractured vertebral body using fluoroscopic guidance. The bone packer is then inflated to lift the endplates and return the vertebral body to its original height.

Kyphoplasty indications include painful or progressive osteoporotic and osteolytic vertebral compression fractures not affecting the spinal canal based on pain level and percentage of vertebral body collapse.

Our doctors at Greater Houston and Greater Victoria Interventional Pain Management are prepared to perform kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fracture. Schedule an appointment today and restore your spine functionality.

What to expect during the procedure

Before the procedure, one of your doctors will examine you, may take blood, and use x-rays or an MRI to locate the fracture.

To perform kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fracture you either may be on local anesthetic, in which case our doctors may also prescribe medications to help you relax and fall asleep; or general anesthesia may be performed, in that case, you will be asleep and feel no pain.

To start, you will be lying face down on the table, where a healthcare provider will clean the area of your back and apply medication to numb the area. A needle is inserted through the skin into the vertebrae. We use real-time x-ray images of her to direct the doctor to the correct area of the lower back, in order to insert the balloon through the needle into the bone and inflate it. This restores the height of the vertebrae. Cement is then injected into the gap to prevent it from collapsing again.
